The Sexy Vegan Cookbook Giveaway!

In The Sexy Vegan Cookbook: Extraordinary Food from an Ordinary Dude  (New World Library, March 15, 2012), “regular dude” and YouTube cooking sensation Brian Patton shares 100 vegan recipes that are failure-proof, fun, and flavor-filled.

The Sexy Vegan Cookbook covers the basics of cooking, from slicing vegetables to finding the right type of tofu to recreating favorites without meat or dairy. With more than 100 recipes, Brian covers everything from cocktails (according to the Sexy Vegan, the most important meal of the day) to amazing breakfast sandwiches to desserts such as Sailor Peanut Rum Ice Cream. There are appetizers and nachos, pizza and tuna-like sandwiches as well as plenty of salads, pasta, and main dish choices.

Watch the trailer, it gave me quite a laugh. I’m definitely loving Brian’s attitude and sense of humor…something we all need a little more of. =)

Since it’s Memorial Day Weekend and we all know that includes burgers, burgers and more burgers. What better way to celebrate the holiday and Brian’s awesome cookbook than by making one of his fabulous burger recipes.

The Beany Tahini Burger and Dreamy Tahini Dressing

Ingredients
  • Makes 4 burgers
  • Ingredients:
  • One 15-ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • ½ cup cooked couscous
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
  • 2 tablespoons chopped kalamata olives
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ roasted red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4 buns of your choosing, halved
  • 2 tablespoons Dreamy Tahini Dressing
  • ½ medium cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded romaine lettuce
  • 1 beefsteak tomato, thinly sliced
  • ½ red onion, thinly sliced
  • For Dreamy Tahini Dressing:
  • Makes 1½ cups
  • Ingredients:
  • ½ cup tahini
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ clove garlic
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh italian parsley
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh mint
  • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • Pinch of smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions
  1. For the burgers:
  2. To make burger patty, in a large bowl, combine chickpeas, couscous, tahini, garlic, orgeano, olives, salt, and pepper. With a fork, potato masher, or your very clean hands, mash all of it together until 90 percent of the chickpeas are mashed. Now that you have this mass, gently fold in the roasted pepper as it would have been destroyed during the initial mixing). Divide the chickpea mixture into four portions and form into ¼-inch-thick patties.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add your burger patties to the pan, and cook them for 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Slather each bun half with dreamy tahini dressing, and assemble the burgers from the bottom up in the following order: 1 bun half, cucumber, chickpea patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, and the other bun half.
  4. For the Dreamy Tahini Dressing:
  5. In a food processor or blender, combine the tahini, lemon juice, water, garlic, parsley, mint, oil, and paprika, and puree until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

I made these into 8 sliders instead of 4 burgers. Alternately, you can bake these at 400 degrees F for 12 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking. I omitted the oil in the Dreamy Tahini Dressing and did not add any salt to either recipe. I also ate mine without the bun and a big green salad. This recipe is fantastic and foolproof.     I actually don’t have any burger recipes. I am a vegetarian college student who has no cookbooks and pretty much no income, so I mostly just make smoothies and veggie paninis when I can. I definitely need some vegan cookbooks!

    Love your website! I was searching for vegan broccoli salad and now I’m all excited about these yummy sounding burgers! :)

    My favor burgers are Zucchini Falafel Patties

    1 15oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
    1 cup bread crumbs (I like panko flakes)
    1 zucchini, grated
    1 tsp coarse salt
    1-2 cloves of garlic
    canola oil

    (serve with pita, lettuce, and vegan tziki sauce)

    mash chickpeas in a big bowl until smooth
    smooth in bread crumbs, zuc, salt, and garlic
    form patties and fry in canola oil until crisp

    I admit I haven’t found a vegan tziki sauce just yet, but I’m still learning.

    Most of the veggie or bean burgers that I’ve tried seem to fall apart. I’ve tried A LOT and the best one for holding together is Jeff Novicks burger. It tastes pretty good too. Thanks!

    My favorite burger recipe:

    Vegan Black Bean Burgers
    2 teaspoons olive oil
    1/4 cup finely chopped onions
    1/4 cup finely chopped carrots
    1/4 cup finely chopped peppers (any color)
    1/4 cup finely chopped mushrooms
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    2 tablespoons ketchup
    2 teaspoons dijon mustard
    2 teaspoons ground cumin
    2 teaspoons ground chili powder
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    3/4 cup black beans
    1/4 cup panko bread crumbs

    I also added some potatoes and textured soy to it too!

    Instructions:
    1. Pre-heat oven to 450 F, and heat large skillet over medium-high heat.
    2. Add oil, onion, carrots, bell peppers, and mushrooms to skillet and saute for 4-5 mins.
    3. Add garlic, and saute for another minute. Add ketchup, chili pepper, salt to skillet (as well as dijuon mustard and cumin if desired)
    4. Remove pan from heat. In a separate bowl, combine beans, bread crumbs, and sauteed vegetables. Foil line a baking sheet.
    5. Once cool enough to handle, form into four equal patties, place onto foil lined sheet, and bake for 15 mins.

    Then I dressed it with homemade avocado hummus and a bit of veganaise, tomatoes, lettuce on a whole wheat vegan bun :) I also tried it in a wrap by making elongated slices and it worked great!

    Hmm I don’t have a recipe exactly, but I usually mash together some black beans, cooked sweet potato, bread crumbs and some spices for my burgers. Then I freeze ‘em, then bake them so they retain their shape a little better. Delicious!

    I absolutley love grilled portabella mushroom burgers!! I make my own little marinade, which is different every time. I start with some olive oil, tamari, garlic salt and pepper, pineapple/orange/mango/peach juice depending on which fruit I am putting on my burger, and whatever herbs and spices I think will fit best with the fruit!

    My favorite veggi burger made thus far (and we make them often!!) was a spicy red bean burger. I don’t even remember where I got the recipe from at this point but it is still the best made yet!

    My favorite burger has got to be falafel even though it is not that original. I love it with the white creamy sauce blended with cucumbers. The sauce would be made with vegan sour cream or a brazil nut cream. Then a big slice or two of heirloom tomato and possibly just have it on a thick slice of iceburg instead of a bun. I’d throw some currants in there for fun and also have it with a slice of red pepper or red pepper in the sauce. =D

    These burgers look really good! I’ve never thought of using tahini or couscous in a burger, but I bet the tahini with chickpeas is a great flavour combo. I can’t wait to try it out, thanks for the recipe!

    Nothing beats a simple black bean burger on the grill. Basmati, garlic, some cumin and a pinch of mustard seed… All topped off with stoneground mustard and a rye bun!
